Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum |

|
Second Step: Violence Prevention Curriculum is a research based program, designated as a national “Model Program” by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Curriculum is designed to decrease impulsive, high risk aggressive behaviors and instill pro-social behavior through teaching young children emotion recognition in self and others; how to manage their emotions; and how to solve problems in a calm and responsive manner. Academic success and social and emotional learning are interconnected. According to a recent study, social and emotional skills training has been linked to fewer classroom disruptions, decreased absences, and higher grades among children (Shriver and Weissberg, 2005). Psychologist Daniel Goleman (1995) reported that children who are taught to manage their emotions have longer attention spans and absorb and remember information better. The Second Step: Violence Prevention Curriculum gives families and educators the tools they need to instill positive social and emotional skills to help children succeed!
